Trails Forum brings County leaders together

Hello, DCFT:

Just wanted to post a quick note to update those of you who haven’t been able to make it to any of our recent events. I hope this finds you all well and enjoying the leaves on one of our beautiful trails.

Ohio-to-Erie Trail Executive Director Jerry Rampelt spoke at our Oct. 17 meeting on his travels of the entire Ohio-to-Erie trail this summer. He has completed mapping the road routes along OTE where there is currently no trail, and on the newly redesigned website (www.ohiotoerietrail.org), you can use Microsoft Virtual Earth to zoom in on any section of trail and see those routes. I tried it out, and it’s good stuff.

Ted Miller of Preservation Parks and Matt Simpson of Floyd Browne and Associates provided a preview of the Delaware County Master Plan they have been working on. This plan should be available electronically sometime soon, and when it is, we will post it on our website. Ted and Matt are collecting feedback currently on the routes they have identified.

Dave Bender will let us know if further clearing will be needed to allow engineers access to the route for the next section of trail. It was also reported that our fund balance is just over $17,000, which is great news seeing as how we have $10,000 committed to the next section of trail.

The Delaware County Trails Forum that we co-hosted on October 24 saw great turnout. The first of its kind in Delaware County, some 40 administrators and officials from around the county took part n presentations on DCFT, the Trail Master Plan, MORPCs role in trail development, funding resources for trail development and trends in trail design. Andy Brenner was our gracious host for the day in the Hayes Building, and reported that the county has received final approvals from ODNR on our Clean Ohio Trail Fund grant and expects an RFP to be issued next week from the County Engineer's office.

It was really good to see so many people in the room dedicated to getting trails to be a regular development consideration in the county.

Mary Kerr and Barry Schumann were also there from DCFT.

Also, at the break there were five different kinds of cookies. I tried them all and would rank them as follows (from best to worse):

Oatmeal Raisin
Sugar
Chocolate Chip
Peanut Butter
Some sort of pecan thing

I know you needed that critical info.

Other Updates:

A number of developments arising from the Oct. 24 meeting of Genoa Township trustees where I presented a number of trail recommendations made by Genoa Twp’s Parks Board. Here are some of the more significant developments:

1)      The township is looking in to extending the sidewalk(s) from Orchard Lake along Mt. Royal to the Genoa Trail to make the trail easier to access for those residents.

2)      The Township is committed to making a trail connection along Africa Road to the Westerville System. This is great news for Highland Lakes residents, who will be able to use trail to access services in Westerville.

3)      Trustees approved the purchase of solar-powered flashing caution signs to warn motorists of the presence of the trail at major intersections, especially the Mt. Royal/SR3 exchange, Lewis Center Road, and Freeman road.

DCFT’s Grants Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, October 30 at 6 p.m. at Panera Bread (Maxtown/SR3). MORPC’s Nate Vogt will also attend this meeting as we plan 2008’s run of grant applications. If you are interested in working on grants, please try and attend this meeting. Remember, at Panera, the refills are free. Last time I was there, I drank, like, seven cups of fruit punch. Talk about sugar rush. It was awesome.

Our final meeting of the year is set for December 19 at 7 p.m. It will be our final meeting at the Galena UMC. We will be electing officers for 2008 at this meeting. If you are interested in serving as an officer, please let me (peterwbrown@yahoo.com) or Jim Flaherty (jim@flahertylaw.com) know. Treasurer Michelle Miller will be resigning her post after two years of great service. Michelle has offered to make sure the taxes and whatnot get seen to appropriately next year, but if you are at all numbers-savvy, we need your skills for our treasurer position. And my personal and our collective thanks to Michelle for her work the past two years.

That’s all the updates for now. Thank you again for your time, attention and dedication to trails in Delaware County.

Pete Brown, President

Good Fall weather, Good Trail Stuff

Couple of good Trail events in the coming two weeks:

QUARTERLY MEETING Wed. Oct 17, 7 p.m. Galena UMC

First and Foremost, I hope you can attend our quarterly meeting this
Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at
the UMC in Galena, OH.

Jerry Rampelt, of the Ohio-to-Erie Trail association will discuss his
recent trail ride from this summer, and Ted Miller will present an
update on the Delaware County Trals Master plan.

Andy Brenner has kept the pencil to the paper guiding ODNR paperwork
through County administration and inching us ever so closely to an
RFP for our Clean Ohio Trail grant extending the trail north from
Plumb Road.

We'll also have updates from our Grants committee, the Trailblazers
and more.

Westerville Walk and Roll fest, Sunday, Oct. 21, 1-4 p.m., Westerville Rec Center

Westerville Walk and Roll-fest, Sunday, Oct. 21, 1-4 p.m.
West
erville Parks and Recreation's first Walk & Roll fest is set for
this Sunday. The event, held at the Rec Center, is designed
to "highlight the benefits of non-motorized and fuel friendly
transportation, allow the community the opportunity to explore
Westerville' s leisure path and bikeway system, learn how to be
healthier, environmentally responsible and have fun at the same time."

I committed DCFT to having our Information Table at this event, and
then realized that I am going to be out of town on that day. I either
need some volunteers to step up and run point on this outreach event,
or back the group out of it. If you think you can help, please drop
me a line.

DELAWARE COUNTY TRAILS FORUM, Wed. Oct 24, Hayes Building

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 24, DCFT is cohosting, along
with Floyd Brown and Associates a Delaware County Trails Forum at the
Hayes Building. Administrators from all around the county have been
invited to this half-day event. Andy will give the opening welcome to
the group and I will be present the work of DCFT in a PowerPoint
presentation.

Genoa Trail festival this Saturday

This Saturday, June 2 is the Trail Festival in Genoa Township, and I still have a number of volunteer opportunities for anyone who can spare an hour or two:

1) The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 8:15, just prior to the start of the 5K run, for anyone who would like to attend.

2) The DCFT info table - should be staffed from 10-4. I will bring our display and collateral materials and help get things set up in the morning, but I will be all over the map, so to speak, throughout much of the morning. Minimally, I am hoping to find 3 volunteers to each take a two hour shift - 10-12, 12-2 and 2-4.

Also, I need a table to set the display on. If you have one to lend, can you let me know? All of the Township's are already spoken for.

3) The Pedal4Progress Used Bike Collection is currently low on volunteers. This involves assessing bikes, collecting $10 donations and removing the pedals and rotating the handlebars so that the bike packs flat for shipping. Again, if anyone can take a 1-2 hour shift, please email me or call me and let me know when you can help out.

4) The Genoa Township PD are running a kid's Bike Safety Rodeo from 11-1:30. There are six stations in the rodeo. We are in need of 1-2 more volunteers to help with helmet fitting or registration. The Officers in charge will brief all of the volunteers between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

If you can help with any of these activities this Saturday, please drop me a note or call my office at 901.8047 and let me know what you'd like to do and when.

I'm hoping this festival is a great success and becomes an annual event - an annual Trail festival in Delaware County will only well-server our message and drive towards a countywide system of connected, dedicated recreational trails.

Thanks again for all of your help and support.

Community Ties team meeting delayed one week

All:

With sincere apologies, I am delaying the Community Ties team meeting until next Monday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Panera Bread at SR3 and Maxtown. A combination of usual work-related crises and a pre-school pageant have made my attendance doubtful. Furthermore, by next Monday we should have website and publications ready to go for distribution.

Used Bike Collection at Genoa Trail Festival

DCFT is a co-sponsor of a Used Bicycle Collection for Pedals4Progress, a nonprofit organization that takes gently used American bicycles and sends them to nations in need overseas, where they can have an immediate and significant impact on one's quality of life.

The collection will take place at the Genoa Trail Festival, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 2 in Genoa Township's McNamara Park. Because it costs an average of $28 for each bike from pickup to delivery, p4p requests a $10 cash donation with each bike.

Bikecollect

DCFT Members can help with this worthy endeavor by printing and posting the flyer attached to this post, volunteering for a shift at the colletcion event on June 2, and by donating any older bicycles you may no longer need.

Pedals4Progress is a registered 501c(3) organization, and donations are tax deductible.

Got Trailer?

Pete Brown is driving the collected bikes to New Jersey for shipping shortly after the collection event. Though it ultimately depends ont he number of bikes collected, Pete is hoping to pull a trailer to NJ to drop the bikes off. If you have a trailer he can use, please let Pete know.

70+ Bags of Garbage Collected at Cleanup

Big thanks to the 19 volunteers who came out for our Earth Day Trail Clean-up. All told, we collected upwards of 70 bags of garbage, including a heavy amount along the new southern connection of the Genoa Trail, which has never been cleaned before.

Dsc_0330

Some of the odd items collected included a man's shoe (size 12), a severly rotten policeman's cap and a spider-man mask. You can probably weave these three elements into one narrative if you tried.

Dsc_0340

Up above Plumb Road, Dave Bender and crew did initial clearing to allow the engineer's easier access for the upcoming Clean Ohio Fund project. Thanks to Dave's clearing, it is easier for them to get back there with those little telescope thingys they need to look through all the time.

Thanks to all who came out and to Keep Delaware County Beautiful for supplying the garbage picker-uppers and work gloves. More pictures are available in the Earth Day photo album.

Also thanks to Erin Miller of MORPC, who was the guest speaker at our April 18 meeting. Erin gave us some updates on what MORPC has going on and provided information folders chock full o' pamphlety-goodness.

Also at the April 18 regular meeting, we:

Gave final approval to purchase the trees for Kane's Crossing

Got an update on the Clean Ohio Grant Implementation from Andy Brenner. Andy said the County Engineer is working on an RFP that they hope to have out in the next 30 day or so for the project to begin later this summer.

Agreed to cosponsor the Pedals4 Progress Used Bike collection at the June 2 Genoa Trail festival.

Got an update on the Community Center project and ballot issue from board member Nancy Hood. Anyone interested in helping with this effort can contact Nancy.

Our next regular meeting is July18, just before Community Ties. We are hoping Orange Township official can attend and provide us an overview of the not-insignificant trail projects that townshp has slated.

We have a whole host of education and outreach activities in the coming weeks. Check them out on the calendar and drop me a note if you can help out.

Good times.

Help Promote our April 21 Trail Cleanup!

Hi again, everybody:

Attached to this post are three versions of a flyer created for our Earth Day Trail Cleanup.

The versions include a standard 8.5" x 11" Flyer, an 8.5" x11" sheet that can be cut into four smaller handbills, and an 11" x 17" poster size. Please download and print any of these to assist our promotion efforts. Place them at your workplace, local business, places of worship - wherever you would like.

As always, thanks to graphic artist Brian Hake for his assistance with these flyers.
